About the Islamic calendar
The Islamic calendar, also called the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 lunar months. Year 1 of the Hijri calendar corresponds to the year of the Hijra, when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emigrated from Mecca to Medina.
• Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon
• A lunar month lasts approximately 29 or 30 days
• The Hijri year is shorter than the solar year by about 11 days
• Event dates may vary according to local moon sighting
